Reflecting on the Election Outcome from Nepal: Finding Unity Amidst Disappointment

As the results of the U.S. election come in, I find myself here in Nepal, reflecting on the outcome with a mix of surprise, disappointment, and, if I’m honest, a deep sense of concern. Just days ago, I shared my reflections on the resilience and unity I see here—how communities come together, driven by shared needs and purpose. Watching the election from this vantage point makes the division back home feel even more poignant, especially when so much is at stake for so many.

As a mother of four daughters, I feel a particular worry about the future of reproductive healthcare and women’s rights. I want my daughters to grow up in a world where they have the freedom to make choices about their own bodies and access to quality healthcare, without fear of those rights being stripped away. Knowing that these issues are in jeopardy makes today’s outcome even more unsettling.

But it’s not just about my daughters. This is a moment where so many in minority groups—whether based on race, religion, gender identity, or sexual orientation—feel a similar fear that their rights, safety, and sense of belonging are all at risk. It’s hard to feel secure when so much seems uncertain and vulnerable. This election has left many feeling isolated, fearful, and wondering if the nation can truly protect and uplift everyone.

Yet, in this moment of worry, I am reminded of the resilience I see here in Nepal, a resilience born from facing challenges with a unified spirit. Even when the future feels uncertain, we must find strength in each other and push forward. While the election result may not have been what many of us hoped for, it’s more important than ever to focus on what we can control: supporting each other, raising our voices, and working together for a future where everyone—our daughters, our neighbors, all of us—can feel safe and valued.

The path forward will not be easy, but we can use this outcome as a call to action—to lead with empathy, to listen deeply, and to build strength in our shared hope for a more inclusive and compassionate world. There is work to be done, but together, we can strive to create a future that reflects the best of who we are.
