Standing With Nepal: AltruCare International Responds to the Devastating Floods

Nepal is once again facing unimaginable loss.

On August 26, a catastrophic flash flood tore through northern Nepal after a massive surge of water, ice, rock and mud descended through the Himalayan region and into the Bhote Koshi–Trishuli river system. Rasuwa and Nuwakot were among the hardest-hit districts, but the effects have extended much farther downstream.

More than 1,000 people have now been reported dead, thousands remain missing, and approximately 93,000 people are believed to have been directly affected. Homes, villages, roads and bridges have been destroyed. Hydropower facilities have been devastated, communities have been cut off from outside assistance, and thousands of people have been forced from their homes.

For families across Nepal, this is not simply a natural disaster. It is the loss of loved ones, homes, livelihoods, schools, healthcare access and, in some cases, entire communities.

The Humanitarian Need Is Enormous

Search-and-rescue operations continue as responders work through unstable terrain, collapsed infrastructure and enormous amounts of debris. In some areas, damaged roads and washed-out bridges have made communities extremely difficult to reach.

The immediate needs are extensive: emergency shelter, food, clean drinking water, sanitation, medical care, first aid and support for displaced families. Disruption of healthcare, clean water and sanitation also creates significant public-health concerns in the days and weeks following the initial disaster.

For AltruCare International, those concerns are especially meaningful.

Our connection to Nepal has always been rooted in healthcare and in the belief that geography should not determine whether someone has access to basic medical care. During a disaster of this magnitude, that mission becomes even more urgent.

Nepal Red Cross Volunteers Are Already on the Ground

The Nepal Red Cross Society has mobilized thousands of volunteers and is actively supporting the emergency response.

As of August 30, the Nepal Red Cross reported that more than 5,000 volunteers had been mobilized to assist with search and rescue, temporary shelter, food distribution, body management and other humanitarian needs.

The organization had already distributed or deployed thousands of essential relief items, including tarpaulins, blankets, mattresses, hygiene and dignity kits, first-aid supplies, stretchers, tents and emergency toilets.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies has also launched a major emergency appeal to support the Nepal Red Cross Society's immediate response and the much longer recovery that lies ahead.

AltruCare International Is Supporting the Nepal Red Cross Society

In response to this disaster, AltruCare International will be directing foundation donations to the Nepal Red Cross Society to support its relief efforts in Nepal.

We made this decision because assistance is needed now, and the Nepal Red Cross already has the local personnel, infrastructure and nationwide network necessary to reach affected communities.

Our work has always been based on a simple principle: help should reach people where the need is greatest.

Right now, that need is extraordinary.

Funds can help support immediate necessities such as safe water, emergency shelter, first aid, food, hygiene supplies and other essential assistance for families whose lives have been devastated.

Nepal's Recovery Will Take Time

The rescue effort is only the beginning.

When the headlines begin to fade, thousands of families will still be rebuilding homes and livelihoods. Roads, bridges, schools, healthcare facilities and essential infrastructure will need to be restored. Communities already facing barriers to healthcare will have to recover from yet another enormous disruption.

AltruCare International remains committed to Nepal not only during moments of crisis, but through the much quieter work of strengthening healthcare access and supporting communities for the long term.

Nepal is a country of extraordinary beauty, resilience and community. But resilience should never mean having to face tragedy alone.
