Reflecting on Our Journey: The Challenges and Opportunities in Laxmi Bazaar, Nepal
As we are mid holiday season here in Nepal, the vibrant celebration of Tihar fills the air. This special festival, known for honoring family bonds and the blessings of prosperity, brings the community together in joy and reflection. However, the holiday also brings to light the realities and challenges we still face in our work here in Laxmi Bazaar, where AltruCare’s first supported medical center stands. A medical center, closed much of the time during a holiday week - imagine that, zero access to healthcare because it’s a holiday.
The last few days at the center have been both humbling and eye-opening. During Tihar, activity slows down, and this pause gives us a chance to reflect on our journey and the road ahead. Although we’re grateful for the progress we’ve made, it’s impossible to ignore some of the barriers still in place that prevent us from reaching our full potential in providing care.
One of the starkest challenges is staffing. The nurse here, though dedicated and compassionate, is largely untrained in advanced medical procedures. It’s clear that she could greatly benefit from more comprehensive training to handle a broader range of patient needs effectively. This gap highlights the importance of a structured training program to equip our team with the skills necessary to handle emergencies and everyday medical issues with confidence and proficiency.
Then there are the infrastructure challenges. Basic facilities we often take for granted, like indoor plumbing fixtures, remain elusive due to political roadblocks and bureaucracy. It’s hard to convey the frustration of seeing patients suffer or healthcare workers struggle due to such simple yet essential resources being out of reach. And while we have fought to bring these improvements to the community, the path forward is often tangled in local politics that can slow down even the simplest of advancements.
One issue that hit me especially hard was learning that people in this region are still at risk of dying from easily treatable snake bites. Without reliable access to antivenom, a basic medical necessity, preventable deaths continue to occur. This is a heartbreaking reminder that there is still so much to do—not only in infrastructure but also in ensuring a steady supply of life-saving treatments.
Despite these challenges, we believe in the resilience of this community and the potential for positive change. With the right focus on staffing, training, infrastructure, and medical supplies, we can make a substantial impact. It’s clear to us now that while we’ve made some strides, there’s still a long journey ahead.
Our recent visit has deepened our commitment to our mission and strengthened our resolve to work harder and smarter alongside the people of Laxmi Bazaar. We’re not where we want to be yet, but we know that together, with continued support and a renewed focus on overcoming these obstacles, we can build a brighter future for this community.
